When I established this site I advised that it is in no way intended as a wine review format. Alas, I must break rank, for a modern gem has been found.
Semillon (pronounced sem ee yon) is one of the three white Bordeaux varieties. In Bordeaux it is not vinified as a dry white varietal, rather, it is blended with its two cousins; Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Only with Bordeaux Sauternes, is Semillon ever found to be varietal, although again, it is often blended, but remains the backbone of the blended Sauternes.
Semillon is also grown in California, South Africa, Chile and Australia. There may be other areas where it is grown, but not notably.
In Australia's Hunter Valley it is the most revered white varietal; towering above Chardonnay as the preferred varietal. Some live to a great age, 25 years or more. The most accomplished producer was the late Murray Tyrrell. His Semillon, among Australians, was considered superior, year in, year out.
Alas, with Tyrrell's passing things changed. The aged Semillon market declined. The wine was vinified for short term drinking.
When I relocated from California to New Zealand in 2012 I found that Semillon was not a market choice. Very little was grown.
Soon after, I met Te Awanga (Hawkes Bay) winemaker, Tim Turvey; founder/owner of Clearview Estate. I was delighted to learn he had a passion for Semillon akin to my own.
I am presently enjoying the 2020 Reserve. It is a wine to be sipped, while listening to MJQ, or other soft jazz, for it deserves to be focused on, as with all great wine. With food, sautee a white flesh fish fillet. It needs nothing more.
This is a truly great white varietal. If not, I would not have 'broken rank' to bring it to your attention.
Until next time, imbibe well.
