Franciacorta is the "other" bottle fermented wine named for its place of origin; alongside Champagne.
Franciacorta and Terre di Franciacorta (the still wine of the region) are the most admired wines in all of Lombardy, from the Province of Brescia. There is an elegance to Franciacorta which seems to have deserted NV champagnes, particularly since the multiple Champagne House ownership merry-go-round commenced a decade ago.
What then, is Franciacorta ? Firstly, it is the king of all Italy's sparkling wines; made sparkling by a second fermentation in bottle. Just three grape varieties are permitted by CVF wine law; Pinot Nero, Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco. It is aged on lees (the dead yeast cells of the bottle fermentation) for terms set by the CVF. 18 months for non-vintage. 30 months for single vintage, and 60 months for Riserva.
Alas, Franciacorta is not easily found outside of Europe. Seek them though. You will be well rewarded. Having spent several harvests in Franciacorta; I do have some favourites.
Herewith, in alphabetical order only:
Bellavista
Ca Del Bosco
Contadi Castaldi
Ricci Curbastro
The Saten (100% Chardonnay) of Ricci Curbastro deserves a special mention. It is elegance personified.
Enjoy !
