Yes, five years have passed since wildfires ravaged Chile's Maule Valley, and surrounds. Six local residents perished, along with five brave firefighters. Whether vineyards would be spared was not immediately obvious.

Of all vineyard designations in Chile, Maule Valley is of particular significance. It was here where the mighty Carignan, a blending component prior to the mid nineties, established its varietal potential, under the guidance of Miguel Torres and his fellow producers. Thus, in 2010 these producers signed their first declaration of shared commitment, and VIGNO was born.

The goal of VIGNO was to better position the Maule Valley by setting it apart through the development and production of character-driven wines that originate from old vines grown in dryland conditions.

All this advancement came close to being derailed by the horrid wildfires of early 2017. However, fate was dealt a helping hand. Miguel Torres, who green farms all his vineyards, relies solely on wind park energy and solar panel electricity, would not be denied. Under his direction, ravaged vineyards have been reborn. Chile is back!

A prime example of the recovery is the Torres Cordillera VIGNO Carignan, 2019. I have not tasted a more wide-ranging, food friendly red for many a day. It is testament to the efforts of Miguel and his colleagues raising Maule Valley from ashes, to life.

Try it. You'll love it.
